DNCC vows to recover canals, tackle waterlogging

Newly appointed Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Azaz today announced that all canals in Dhaka will be gradually reclaimed from encroachers.
While speaking at a view-exchange meeting with journalists at Nagar Bhaban in the capital's Gulshan, he said, alongside recovering canals, necessary steps will be taken to keep the city's waterlogging problem at a tolerable level during the upcoming monsoon season.
"We have already taken the initiative to recover Haikkar Khal from encroachers, and we will restore its connection with the Lautola canal," he said.
Azaz also stressed the importance of ensuring open spaces for city dwellers.
A functional drainage system and proper solid waste management are also essential, he added. He also lamented the city's worsening air quality.
The administrator also announced an upcoming drive against food adulteration.
To conserve electricity and curb juvenile delinquency, he proposed closing markets by 8:00pm every day after Ramadan.
