DoE fines Feni University Tk 5 lakh for encroaching upon century-old waterbody

Department of Environment (DoE) today fined Feni University Tk 5 lakh for encroaching upon a century-old waterbody at Feni Sadar upazila.

The fine was imposed after a hearing at DoE's Khulsi office in the port city.

Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram region told The Daily Star that the 13-acre waterbody, known as Mohammad Ali Dighi, is located near the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the upazila's Sundarpur area.

The university authority filled up a large portion of the waterbody without approval from DoE, he said, prompting the regulatory body to slap them with the hefty fine.
