HC directs NCC to protect playground, ponds in Narayanganj
The High Court today directed authorities concerned to protect and maintain the Udyan, playground, and three ponds on seven acres of land inside Chittaranjan Cotton Mill in Godnail area of Narayanganj City Corporation.
The NCC and Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) have been asked to jointly implement the directive.
The HC also declared illegal the decision of Chittaranjan Cotton Mills Limited to fill up the Udyan, playground, and three ponds at the mill area under BTMC for turning the land into housing plots.
The bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam delivered the verdict following a writ petition filed as a public interest litigation.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association in 2013 filed the petition challenging the Chittaranjan Cotton Mills Limited's decision.
The petitioner's lawyer S Hasanul Banna told The Daily Star that the mill can run their activities by protecting and maintaining the Udyan, playground, and three ponds following the HC verdict.
Lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan appeared for BELA while lawyer Md Bodruddoza argued for BTMC and Deputy Attorney General Wayesh Al Haruni represented the state during the petition hearing.
