The water level of all the rivers, including Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar, have receded in Kurigram point

The water level of all the rivers, including Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar, have receded in Kurigram point.

Dudhkumar was flowing 1cm above the danger level last evening, but since this morning, it has been flowing 2cm below the danger level, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting officials.

However, some chars along the river have remained submerged.

Farmer Samad Mia, 60, of Char Teliani on Dudhakumar river bed in Kurigram's Nageshwari upazila told The Daily Star this afternoon that though water receded from his house, there was still floodwater in the char. They have to travel by boat as the roads are submerged underwater.

Nizam Uddin, 55, a farmer of Char Bhagatipur on the Brahmaputra river bed in Kurigram Sadar upazila, said that the water in the river has reduced a lot. If there is no rain upstream, there is no possibility of floods. However, they are facing problems with rearing cattle as the grasslands are submerged under water.

Biplab Kumar Mohanta, deputy director of DAE in Kurigram, told The Daily Star that there are not many crops in the river banks and char areas.

"Aman saplings, jute, and vegetables of around 200 hectares of croplands are submerged in water along the river bank and char areas. As the river water is receding, there will not be much damage," he said.

Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of WDB in Kurigram, said the water level of all the rivers in the district is below the danger level and the water continues to decrease. There are no chances of flash floods.

However, as the water recedes, erosion has occurred at 30 points. Sand-filled geo bags and geo tubes are being dumped at 26 points to check the erosion. CC blocks are also being dumped at some places, he said.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said there was no flood situation. They have sufficient stock of dry food and cash in hand to deal with floods, if necessary.
