An elephant calf was found dead at Islampur Union of Cox’s Bazar district yesterday.

An elephant calf was found dead at Islampur Union of Cox's Bazar district yesterday.

Forest officials recovered the calf from Gojalia area of Islampur Union at 10:00am.

Anwar Hossen Sarkar, divisional forest officer of Cox's Bazar Forest Division (north), told The Daily Star that locals informed that an elephant calf, aged around two, was lying dead in Gojalia area of Fulchari village.

They rushed to the spot and recovered the body. A team of livestock department is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, he said.

The mammal is categorised as critically endangered in the IUCN list due to its dwindling population.

Seven elephants were killed in just 11 days in this month across in Sherpur, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar district.
