Tk 3 crore lawsuit filed against RMCH authority for killing birds
The wildlife management and nature conservation division of Forest Department filed a Tk 3 crore compensation case against authorities of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for destroying the environment by killing birds in its premises.
Jahangir Kabir, an inspector of the division, today informed reporters that he filed the prosecuted offence report (POR) with the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Rajshahi on September 7, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent.
Apart from the RMCH authority, six other unnamed persons were accused for their involvement in killing birds.
In the case filed under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act-2012, he demanded Tk 1 crore for killing the birds and Tk 2 crore compensation for damaging environment through the act.
In the case documents, it was alleged that on September 4, RMCH authority felled an Arjun tree to create space for constructing a drain and a garage.
When the tree was cut down, nearly a hundred chicks of Asian open-bill storks, cormorants and herons that relied on the tree died.
Some 60 to 80 of the birds were slaughtered and taken home by locals that day, the case document says.
