Day 1 of ‘special lockdown’ observed in some Noakhali areas

On the first day of the week-long lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19, main roads and thoroughfares in six unions and municipal areas of Sadar upazila of Noakhali were largely free of vehicles and crowds.
No movement was allowed in the declared lockdown areas except for emergency services.
An emergency meeting was held yesterday under the leadership of the district's Coronavirus Prevention Committee President and Deputy Commissioner Md Khorshed Alam. Superintendent of Police Md Alamgir Hossain, Noakhali Civil Surgeon Dr Masum Iftekhar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Israt Sadmin Milki and other officials of the health department and district administration were present in the meeting, said our correspondent.
At the meeting, Md Khorshed Alam announced strict lockdown in six unions and municipal areas of Noakhali Sadar upazila. The lockdown started from 8:00 am today, and will continue till 12:00 pm on June 11.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Israt Sadmin said, five mobile teams led by executive magistrates including Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Farhana Jahan Upama in collaboration with Sadar police have been working in the restricted areas since morning to successfully implement the lockdown. All shops except medicine stores and kitchen markets were closed during the lockdown. No vehicles other than ambulances were allowed to operate.
The Noakhali Civil Surgeon said that in 24 hours, 390 samples were tested in the district and coronavirus was detected in 127. The infection rate is 32.56 percent. The total number of infected in the district is 9,054 so far, and 123 people have died from them.
