Two people, including a four-year-old girl, died of dengue within a span of 24 hours at a hospital in Chattogram city.

The deceased are Saddam Hossain Al Quadri (35), a teacher of Gauchiya Tayabiya Sunniya Dakhil Madrasa in Sitakunda upzaila, and Sabina Miraz (4) from Bayezid Bostami area in the port city, Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Elias Chowdhury confirmed.

Both patients died at Chattogram Ma O Shishu Medical College Hospital in the city, our staff correspondent reports quoting the civil surgeon.

Contacted, Dr Fahim Hasan Reza, assistant professor of Paediatric Department of the hospital, said Saddam died around 8:30pm on Wednesday while Sabina died on Tuesday.

Both patients were suffering from dengue haemorrhagic while the platelet count of blood of both the patients decreased dangerously, he said.

Sabina was given treatment at ICU for two days before she died, the doctor said, adding that Saddam was first admitted to Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital in Bhatiari with fever around a week ago.

"As his health condition deteriorated, he was shifted to our hospital on Monday," the doctor said.

Civil Surgeon Elias, however, could not say how many dengue patients were admitted to the hospital in Chattogram in the last 24 hours.
