Roadside bomb kills 8 Afghan cops
Eight Afghan policemen were killed when a roadside bomb tore through their vehicle in the southern province of Kandahar yesterday, a police commander said.
The remotely detonated bomb went off near the province's restive district of Zhari, which saw major battles against the Taliban last year, provincial police chief Esmatullah Alizai told AFP.
He blamed the "enemies of Afghanistan" for the attack, a phrase used by many Afghan officials to refer to Taliban rebels who have been waging a guerrilla insurgency since their 2001 ouster by the United States.
"It was a remote-controlled bomb. Sadly eight policemen were killed. They were on patrol when the bomb went off," Alizai said.
The Taliban have made increasing use of roadside bombs against foreign and government forces in Afghanistan. Officials say they are copying the tactics of Iraqi insurgents.
