Father, son to walk gallows for murder in Pabna

A court in Pabna today sentenced a man and his son to death and three others to life term imprisonment for killing a youth in the district town in 2008.

Additional district and sessions judge Sham Sundor Roy pronounced the verdict in the crowded court room this noon, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The death sentence awardees are Mizanur Rahman Mizan and his son Md Tushar. Meanwhile, Md Masum, Md Mishu, and Md Arshed alias Ershad were sentenced to life in prison.

Of the convicts, Masum and Arshed appeared before the court while others were not present during the verdict, said Md Eusuf Ali Sardar, additional public prosecutor of the court.

The court also fined each convict Tk 20,000, he said.

It also acquitted four other accused in the murder case as the allegations brought against them could not be proven, added the public prosecutor.

According to case statement, the convicts hacked the youth, Rayhan Chowdhuri Hera, to death in Poilanpur area of Pabna town on May, 5, 2008 as they had dispute with the youth over repaying money.

Victim's father Azhar Ali filed a case accusing nine people. Police submitted the charge sheet against all the nine accused.

After examining witnesses and documents, the court handed down the verdict today, added the prosecution.
