A petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to conduct a judicial inquiry into the allegation of torture and death of apprentice lawyer Rejaul Karim Reja in custody of police in Barishal.

A petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to conduct a judicial inquiry into the allegation of torture and death of apprentice lawyer Rejaul Karim Reja in custody of police in Barishal.

Rejaul's wife Marufa Akter submitted the petition under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) recently to the HC through lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir, apprehending that investigation of the case by police may not be fair as three police personnel are accused in the case.

Citing the petition, lawyer Shishir Manir told The Daily Star that Kotwali Police Station in Barishal has refused to record the case as three police personnel are accused of torture and death of Rejaul Karim Reja in custody on January 4 this year.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is now conducting investigation into the case in line with a Barishal court's order, the lawyer said, adding that there is reasonable apprehension that fair investigation in the case by police may not happen.

Fair investigation of a case is a precondition of fair trial of a case, he said.

The lawyer also said the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman may hold hearing on the petition this week.

PBI was ordered by the Barishal court to submit its probe report before the court by February 23.
