BUPLMCC successfully organises LawRencia: A law career-based event
From 25-27 February, Bangladesh University of Professionals Law and Moot Court Club (BUPLMCC) organised a law career-based event titled, "LawRencia" where prominent professionals shared their experiences with the students on different prospects of their respective careers. It was divided into four consecutive sessions: aiming at fourth branch institutions, career as gazetted officers, career as lawyers and career in academia and higher study abroad. Siraj Uddin Ahmed, the Chairman Department of Law, BUP presided over the inauguration ceremony of the event. Thanking everyone, he hoped for the success of the event. Later on, the moderators and club's current president took turns to conduct the four sessions. In the first session, Al Farhad Bin Kashem, Assistant Director of Legal Services at the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, MD. Nazmul Hossen, Assistant Director (Law and Implementation) of Bangladesh Competition Commission, and M Rabiul Islam, the Deputy Director of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh (NHRCB), were present as key speakers. They discussed the prospectus of their respective fields and pushed a common idea to the participants to break down stereotypes about career planning.
The second session titled career as gazetted officers, had on board Mr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Shohel, Additional Superintendent of Police, Police Bureau of Investigation and Mahafuza Akter Mitu, an Assistant Judge at Bangladesh Judicial Service. They both provided an overview of the academic strategy that is needed for Bangladesh Civil Service and judicial service exams, respectively.
Mr. Tanzum Mozammel, senior Associate of A.S & Associates and Sumaiya Binta Tanvir, Associate of Alliance Laws were panelists for the third session on career as lawyers as panelists. Mr. Mozammel described his experience in tech law practicing, corporate structuring and restructuring. Sumaiya Binta Tanvir explained her journey to becoming a lawyer as a woman and the associated complications. She said, "As a lawyer, you can get respect, power and money, all in one profession." She also advised the female students to be more confident and to work harder to achieve their goals.
Dr. Shima Zaman, Professor, Department of Law, University of Dhaka, Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Bangladesh University of Professionals and Emraan Azad, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Bangladesh University of Professionals were present as panelists in the last session on career in academia and higher education abroad. The speakers explored the prospects of a career in academia and how to pursue higher education abroad. Dr. Shima Zaman introduced the audience with three D's; Decency, Discipline and diligence, qualities required to build a career in academia. Following which, Md. Abu Bakar Siddique added that without abiding by these qualities, a student might not prosper in academic careers. Lastly, Emran Azad began his speech by sharing his personal experience from University of Cambridge and focused on the technical aspects of higher education, including writing Statement of Purpose, and approaching professors for the recommendation letters. He also instructed participants to be more vigilant about studies, networking and communications. The event ended on 27th of February 2022 with the closing remarks from the President of the club.
