Ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbaria routes have been suspended since early today as per government instructions to curb the spread of coronavirus infection ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

During daytime, only one ferry will operate on each of the routes for ambulances and vehicles carrying deadbodies, confirmed Ashik-uz-Zaman, general manager (passenger-ferry) Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).

During night time, ferry operations will resume to only carry goods-laden vehicles, he added.

On the Paturia-Daulatdia ferry ghat, a huge pressure of passengers was witnessed since morning, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

A ferry called Kunjalota from Banglabazar carrying ambulances arrived at Shimulia ghat around 8:30am. As the ferry unloaded, passengers waiting for hours at the ghat got on it forcefully.

Later authorities let it go to Banglabazar. No other ferries have left the ghat since then.
