The first prize winning floral arrangement
The fusion of earth and sky, the divine unity of natural elements and the heavenly relationship between human beings and earththese are the few facets of Ikebana, the Japanese ancient art of flower arrangement. Asia Bunka Kaikan Dosokai (ABKD) has been working for the last three decades to promote this aesthetic artwork in our country. And to mark this auspicious 30-year journey ABKD arranged a daylong Ikebana exhibition at Spectra Convention Centre on March 18.

Professor SMA Faiz, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, was the chief guest while Matsushiro Horiguchi, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh was the special guest. Dr AKM Moazzem Hussain, the President of ABKD presided over the programme.

Ikebana can influence moods and this explains the charm of this artwork. The organisers say that 26 enthusiastic participants took part in the competition. Nurun Nahar Akhter won the first prize for capturing the balance and the contrast of black, yellow and green in her decoration. Razia Jahan scored second while Rahima Afroz won the third prize.

Apart from the competition, the "Crest of Gratitude" award was given to the three teachers of the Ikebana School: Abdur Rashid Bhuiyan, Kazuyo Zoha and Husna Banu Khanom.
