Dhaka Drama Nattyadal staged the comedyAmi Gadha Bolchhi(I am the donkey speaking), based on Krishan Chandar's novel, at the Public Library auditorium recently on request of the audience who failed to get tickets of the play on its 75th presentation on 22nd July at Mahila Shamiti auditorium. The drama was adapted by Munir Ahmed and directed by Majibur Rahman Dilu.

The stage-decoration with lighted-masks and a big statue of a donkey--its eyes lit with red light--obviously earned the audience's interest at the very outset of the play. A clown was used to introduce the scenes like bar, hospital, taxi-stand etc. He was carrying the nameplates dancing with the rhythm of music.

The story is about a donkey symbolising the innocent people. The name of the play could be 'I am a human being speaking' instead of 'I am the donkey speaking'. A class of people is struggling hard against all odds of society. The donkey of this play is exploited by people from all walks of life. He starts his journey with anew after his bitter experiences. He wants to mingle with people close to the earth. At last, however, he has no other choice but to say, 'It's not the Alladin's lamp through which people succeed, it's the hard work that brings a person's luck.'

The main role, the Donkey, was played by the director Majibur Rahman Dilu himself and the audience enjoyed his performance. The other characters played by Belal Sayeed, Ratna Mahmud and Atul Rahman enchanted the audience.

However, the play seemed quite lengthy and the audience got saturated with all the comedy; as a result, the play lost the tempo of its humour. Otherwise it was a pleasant experience.
