Bangladeshi art to be displayed at Commonwealth Games

The Bengal Gallery has been nominated coordinator of the Bangladeshi part of the art exhibition organised in connection with the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, 2006. The art exhibition titled,Play/Lila: Contemporary Miniatures and New Art from South Asia, brings together the works of 23 artists from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. From Bangladesh, the works of two distinguished artists, Abdus Shakoor and Shishir Bhattacharjee will be included in the exhibition.

"The cultural events will celebrate the games and will begin on March 8," said Abdus Shakoor. "The programme will focus on the condition of arts and crafts. I provided some miniature works while Shishir gave some contemporary works to choose from. The curator wanted Bangladesh to be represented in the best way possible and did not go in for abstract work. It is a credit for Bangladesh that its paintings will be seen and appreciated abroad."
