Bengal Foundation to celebrate Baishakhi

The celebration ofBaishakhiis an integral part of the Bangalee culture. Needless to mention,Baishakhiis commemorated with gusto by the Dhakaiites. In the last three decades Dhaka has expanded in leaps and bounds. Places like Bashundhara, Baridhara, Badda and Jowar Shahara have been urbanised and included in the city limits. TheBaishakhicelebrations however, mostly take place around central Dhaka, making it a little difficult for the residents of the northern areas of Dhaka, to participate.

The Bengal Foundation seeks to take the Baishakhi celebrations to the Dhakaiites living in the neighborhoods of outer Dhaka. The Foundation has planned a three-day-long Baishakhi celebration starting from April 13 at the open space behind the Wonderland amusement park in Gulshan.

Bengal Foundation organised a press conference at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, Dhanmondi on April 10. Luva Nahid Chowdhury, director of Bengal Foundation, Subir Chowdhury, Director of Bengal Gallery and Mahbub Alam Pallob, Assistant Manager of Bengal Foundation, spoke at the occasion.

According to the organisers, there are to be about 100 stalls, featuring the local arts and crafts. The funds accumulated through the sale of these items will go solely to the craftsmen and artists. The festival will have attractions such as dance recitals, folk songs, poetry recitation, instrumental presentations of Dhak-Dhol, banshi, classical music, solo songs by renowned artistes, dance drama Chitrangada, renditions of folk songs by popular bands and a jatra - Anarkali.

The programmes will start from 5 pm and continue till 9:30 pm on April 13, 8:30 in the morning to 10 at night on April 14 and 9:30 am till 10 pm on April 15 with afternoon breaks.

The festival would be open to all.
