A scene from the play Bhuboner Ghate.
Bhuboner Ghateby Dr. Syed Manjurul Islam was the last play of the 8-day-long drama festival arranged by Natyajan at the Public Library auditorium recently. It is the 6th production of Natyajan.

The play is about the daily life of the down trodden people. The protagonist of the play is an underprivileged acid victim, a house-wife tortured by her husband.

The woman who has migrated alone from a village struggles a lot to re-establish herself in the cruel social structure of Dhaka City. In this world she faces new kinds of problems and she has to tell lies not for any self interest but for her survival. The play takes us to face an eternal question: who is a friend and who is not? Sometimes we come across many evil doers in the society who are unknown to us but they come forward to help us in times of need at a time when relatives refuse to do so.

Some typical characters of Sadarghat area--like gangsters, pimps and prostitutes--are portrayed in the play. However, plot construction and dialogue fiction are not very rich.

Promising director Munira Yousuf Memi has done her job successfully with a realistic approach. She has used all parts of the stage.

Set designer Uttam Guho has given good support to the director by creating a real picture of a busy Sadarghat area. The front side of a steamer and two mobile tea stalls have been used.

The only negative part of the play is the poor light designing of Uttam Guho.

All artistes, except Shilpi and Khair, lack spontaneity and proper initiative.
