Bold black and white sketches

Asked why he had chosen black and white for his works, Anukul says, 'I've used pastel on paper for most of my works here. For some, I've added a few strokes of muted colours in a mother and child theme and in others, bringing in a romantic relationship between man and woman. I wanted to play up line drawing in this specific show. For me, emotions and feelings are important and in my works I've not only tried to show the beauty of human figures but also the importance of human feelings.'
Anukul's figure work has been influenced by SM Sultan, Quamrul Hassan and Zainul Abedin. He has also kept in mind the strokes of Matisse and Picasso. Inspired, as he has been, by the masters, he has tried to form a style of his own, where lines are repeated and women are the main themes. In order to bring in the softness of the dark complexion of the average Bangladeshi women, Anukul says that he has used repetition of his black lines. At times yellow and red have been used to offset the dark shades.
He says that the drawings are the base of a bigger exhibition with a larger vision in future. He has selected 12 from a collection of 1000 sketches of pastel.
Earlier, Anukul has had two solos and has taken part in important 20 joint shows in Bangladesh and in France.
