Bonsai display at Rajshahi

On display were bonsai trees, owned by 40 bonsai artists. The bonsai species included Country Banyan, Paikar, Laikar, Chaitan, Tamarind, China Banyan, Baichi, Jilapi, Hijal, Shewla, Jet, Ghurni Bichi, Adnium, Ficus, Golden Karancha, Kamini and more.

A bonsai artist Subrata Das said, although the bonsai culture originated in China, it evolved later in Japan. The word bonsai came from Japan. Bon means pot and Sai means tree.

In Rajshahi the first bonsai exhibition was organised in 1986 under the aegis of the Rajshahi Bonsai Society. Abdus Salam, who has been engaged with the art for 30 years, said, that he has around 50 species of bonsai in home collection. The bonsai trees, aged between five and 50 years, are priced from Taka 1000 to Taka 30,000.
