Call for revival of Jatra
To protect jatra and revive this art form, Bangladesh Jatra Shilpo Unnayan Parishad (BJSUP) organised a press conference on May 16 at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium. Presided over by Milon Kanti Dey, secretary of BJSUP, Ramzan Ali Mia, president of BJSUP announced a plan of action, including their seven-point demand to protect and bring back the golden era of jatra. Gazi Mazhar, Bazlur Rahman, Mainul Islam, Zakir Hossain and other jatra activists and member of BJSUP were also present at the conference.
"Jatra is striving for recognition as an art form. The disreputable Acting Control Act has been cancelled but 'Bengal Places of Public Amusement Act 1933' is still enforced. We strongly recommend the repealing of this Black Act," said Ramzan Ali Miah. "Not only this, we want a separate 'Jatra Troupe Security Commission' comprising the notable persons of the particular areas and the local administrative officers to ensure the performers' safety," he added "Moreover, jatra should be under the Cultural Affairs Ministry not under the Home Ministry."
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. "The concerned authority instead of taking strong steps against activities like gambling and vulgar dance, are putting the blame on the jatra troupes," informed Milon Kanti Dey.
" This has resulted in unemployment of lakhs of people related to this field. From last October to this April, 65 troupes weren't able to stage their shows, which resulted in a huge financial loss. Continuous financial disaster is causing the reduction in the number of jatra groups every season," he asserted.
"National Jatra festivals should be organised regularly by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and jatra artistes should be given National Awards." said Milon.
"To implement these demands we have planned to arrange a roundtable with the media houses, human rights activists, intellectuals, politicians and the government officials from the first week of June," said the speakers.
