With the modern pursuit for a greater meaning of life, several questions crop up: How deeply do we care about our common future? How do we actually make a positive difference? These were the few questions that rose in the minds of the organisers, performers and the audience at the Shaheed Minar premises on the second day of the 11-day long programme organised by Shammilito Sangskritik Jote (SSJ) to commemorate the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.

The programme was, as usual, interspersed with songs, dances, recitations, street plays and other cultural shows. However, the highlight of the programme was a call to lend support to aspiring singer Purabi Ray, who is suffering from a severe kidney ailment. The 20-year-old Purabi, a promising singer of Chhayanaut and Khelaghar, is being treated presently at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.

"Unless we learn to mutually respect and care for each other, unless we come to terms with the increasing vulnerability of life, true progress will remain an illusion, mired in the quicksand of greed, violence and selfish intent," said the articulate Mahbubul Haider Mohon of Kranti.

Apart from this, the dance performance by Bhorer Pakhi Shishu Kishor Shangathan, the patriotic songs by the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and the allegorical play titled Kheyali Raja of the Bhashkar Natyadal delighted the audience.
