The international theatre scene is humming with activity. Bangla Theatre returned to Bangladesh yesterday after staging three shows ofChe'r Cycleat the Asian People's Theatre Festival in Hong Kong. In a reverse direction, on December 7 Dhaka Theatre left the country to stageBinodiniat the Second International Monodrama Festival in UAE.

Mamunur Rashid's play Che'r Cycle was staged in three consecutive shows at NGAU Chi Wan Civic Centre, Hong Kong. Mamunur Rashid said, "Mok Chiuyu, a director of Hong Kong, invited us to stage shows of Che'r Cycle as a protest against the scheduled WTO summit in Hong Kong"

"Depicting Che Guevara's revolution, Che'r Cycle is a protest against globalisation," adds Mamunur. Faiz Zahir is the director of the play.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Theatre has left for UAE to stage Binodini at the Second International Monodrama Festival, which will run from December 8- 20. Binodini, directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff, will be staged at the festival on December 9. The play incorporates a solo performance by Shimul Yousuff and is based on the autobiography of the 19th century pioneering theatre actress Binodini Dasi. Vice President of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) Ramendu Majumdar, who is also the president of ITI Bangladesh Centre, is accompanying the team.
