Chinnapatra: a unique collection

Chinnapatra is a wonderful prose poem, a collection of letters that Rabindranath wrote between 1889 to 1895 to his niece Indira Devi. The letters describe the Padma--the natural beauty of the river and its people. There are 244 letters in the collection.

Many critics have described Rabindranath's sojourn on the banks of Padma as an epic.

Internationally famous photographer Dr Noazesh Ahmed has attempted to visualize some of these Chinnapatra letters through a selection of photographs in a video-photography of the same name. For a number of years Noazesh followed the route of the poet on the Padma and on land to recapture the ambience and Tagore's poetry. Through his still pictures he has thus created a unique gallery of portraits. He has also made a short video film based on his collection of 140 photographs, which recreate the unique poetic and visual beauty of the Chinnapatra letters. To these letters have been added characters from three of Tagore's timeless tales--Raicharan of Khokababur Protyaborton, Ratan of Postmaster and Giribala of Megh O Roudra.
