A chit-chat with Rumi

Rumi seen with the co-artistes of the popular mega serial Ronger Manush

Rumi's story goes back to her days in a production house. One momentous day, Masum Reza, the playwright of Ranger Manush, invited her to act in the serial. She had already worked in a few stage dramas such as Loha, Nityapuran and Birsa kabya as a member of the Desh drama group and acted in serials like Atithi Apan, Shey Bhubane and Shada megher brishti.

'Although I had worked on stage and TV serials with talented and popular directors such as Awal Reza, Amitabh Reza and Giasuddin Selim, Ranger Manush gave me viewer recognition. Although it is embarrassing sometimes to be called Kushum, it also makes me happy and I fell proud to be a part of the serial,' she adds.

Explaining the popularity of the mega serial Ranger Manush on ntv, Rumi says, 'Even though the serial is based on a story of rural life and tradition, it is quite different from other typical rural stories. Rather than dwelling on the common miseries of rural life, it depicts the pleasant side.'

The shooting of the serial, at Hotapara, Gazipur, is now over. Recalling the camaraderie that was built up during the actors and crew's stay at this idyllic spot, Rumi says, 'We had a lot of fun there. We were like a family. We addressed each other with the names of our characters in the serial.' Apart from Salauddin Lavlu, the director, Rumi says, she was helped during the shooting by noted actors ATM Shamsuzzaman, Wahida Mallik Jolly and Shomu Chowdhury.

Lavlu has so far directed many popular plays. Rumi has words of praise for his direction. As she says, 'He is a powerful director.' After the shooting of Ranger Manush, Rumi is comparatively free for the time being and is on the look out for challenging roles in well crafted films.
