Coming a long way with music

Here are excerpts from an interview with Bishwajit:

Do you feel that you have come a long way?

When it comes to creative work, 25 years is not really a long time. In fact, life seems a very short span for creative work. What I have achieved so far is purely the result of my audience's love for me. There have been a lot of mistakes and lack of care. If I could rewind and start again, I would correct those mistakes.

Any sad experience?

One of Manna Dey's famous songs has a line--Shilper jonno shilpi shudhu [artistes are for art only]. I have realised it in my life. After my father's death, we were taking his body from Dhaka to Chittagong. On the ferry, I came out of the microbus and people started gathering around me. Some asked for autographs, some wanted to take snaps with me, some even asked me to sing! I told the crowd about the sad phase I was going through, but nobody would care. My mother told me to please them, believing that would appease the departed soul of my father.

What are you working on at present?

I am doing music for a TV drama to be aired on the coming Eid. Earlier I did title songs for a few plays. But this time I'm composing the music of a drama. I believe viewers will find it different.

What are your future plans?

I have had offers from some Indian music directors and I intend to work with them. I believe our artistes have the potential for working at the international level. We should explore this field which will ultimately glorify our music, our language and our country.
