Commemorating the 11th death anniversary of SM Sultan

Presided by Ahmed Nazir, the director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, some of the personalities who took part in the discussion are artists Syed Jahangir, Abu Taher, Nahid Akhter and the Director of Fine Arts Department ABM Salahuddin.

Artist S M Sultan set an excellent example of creative art by utilising local materials in a local style, commented Syed Jahangir. The artist, who possessed a profound sense of patriotism and a wide stock of knowledge on modern art, could talk for hours on art without repeating any theme. To help children grow up as worthy citizens, he created Shishusharga.

According to Abu Taher, Sultan was a mysterious painter who left the glamour of Dhaka to live alone amongst nature by the bank of the river Chitra. His artwork was a relentless search for the creator. Nahid Akhter remarked that Sultan, otherwise known as Lalmia, generously portrayed the struggles of labourers and farmers of Bangladesh. The artist's mysticism and the tune of his flute still invoke patriotic values in the hearts of artists and art connoisseurs.
