Cultural programme commemorates Amar Ekushey

Performers of Udichi, Kranti and Chhayanaut presenting the timeless song of Ekushey

By placing floral wreath as homage to the martyrs of 1952, Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury, language activist and composer of the first poem on Ekushey--Ami fashir dabi niye eshechi, inaugurated the 11-day long programme. Singers of cultural groups Udichi, Kranti and Chhayanaut rendered the National Anthem and the timeless song of Ekushey, Aamar Bhaier Rokte Rangano Ekushey February.

The inauguration was followed by a discussion session. Presided over by Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu, president of SSJ, cultural activists Ramendu Majumder, Golam Kuddus, Ataur Rahman, Mannan Heera, Afzal Hossain and poet Mohammed Samad spoke on the occasion.

Poet Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury said, "If everyone lights a lamp it would achieve the power of Sun. We should unite ourselves with the spirit of Ekushey to fight against all evils and misdeeds."

Speakers opined that every coming generation will have to achieve their rights to freedom through understanding the spirits of Ekushey and the Liberation War of the country.

After the discussion, a colourful cultural programme was held at the premises. Spandan's dance sequence, Swanan's group recitation, Udichi's rendition of chorus and Mahola Theatre's street play titled Karod Goli delighted the audience. Solo recitation by Bhaswar Bandopadhyay, Ravi Shankar Maitri and Belayet Hossain and songs by Bulbul Mahalanabish, Moloy Kumar Ganguli, Bulbul Islam, Biswajit Roy and Mamun Zahid Khan also captivated the crowd.

The programme will start everyday at 4pm. SSJ organises another programme from February 15 to 21 at the Rabindra Sarovar Mancha, Dhanmondi.
