On display at the Chitrak Gallery in Dhanmondi till March 12 were a series of Mustaque Ahmed's 37 paintings in a semi-abstract and abstract mode. To single out a few:anubhuti 27, an acrylic on canvas, depicts a woman with flowing tresses set against the rays of the sun. The colours are largely red, grey, orange, blue and black.

Some of the paintings deliver a hard-hitting message, as for instance, anubhuti-29, also in acrylic on canvas. At the base of the painting are the flowing colours of the National Flag. At the top is what looks like a menacing cloud or what Mustaque dubs as an "unknown creature". This is symbolic of the anti-social elements which hold the country to ransom.

A refreshing work, anubhuti-22, acrylic on canvas, brings in the gay colours of yellow, green and white. The painting conjures up images of the sky and forest.

Mustaque has been busy with art over the last few years. Among his other milestones are a group exhibition at the Dhoomimal Gallery, Mumbai in 2006, a fundraiser exhibition at the Nomad Art Gallery, Pakistan to aid earthquake survivors in 2005 and a display in aid of flood affected people in Dhaka (2004) at Saju Art Gallery.

The entire proceeds from the sale of the paintings on display will go to the Savar-based Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), of which Mustaque is a trustee. A worthy cause indeed for which the credit must go to Mustaque.
