Dhaka Regional Disabled Children's Drama Festival 2004

Action on Disability and Development (ADD) Bangladesh arranged a street drama festival on the disabled children recently. The venue was the Shaheed Minar Premises.

After a colourful rally, the discussion session was presided over by Musharraf Hossain, The Country Director of ADD Bangladesh. Rokeya Kabir, The President of Naari Progoti Shongha, Salma Ali, the President of Bangladesh Women Lawyers' Association and others in their speech revealed their deep concern about the cruelty perpetrated on the disabled children by an apathetic society.

GM Kader, MP, inaugurated the ceremony. In his speech, Kader said, ' The Parliament passed a law for the rehabilitation of the disabled people three years ago. However, we do not see any implementation of that law.'

After the inauguration, Baak O Srobon Protibondhi from Bogura, Baoniabadh Protibondhi Unnoyon Shongstha from Dhaka, Badda Trinomul Protibondhi Natyadal from Dhaka, Kushtia Shishu Protibondhi Natyadal staged Nishshobder Kathamala, Shesh Jana Nei, Thikana Kothay and Shishu Nirjatan respectively.

Through the plays, disabled children presented their day to day problems and sufferings. Shahin Rahman, the trainer said, 'It is a tough job to work with the disabled performers. We try to make the performers realise what we are going to represent through the plays. Through the plays, we never go for any solution to a problem, rather, we try to focus on the problem to create awareness amongst the common people.'

After the plays, Durjay Natyadal from Kushtia presented Gombhira (a traditional way of presenting a duel between two singers on a particular issue). The disabled artistes took part in it.

Playwright Anisul Haque and Masum Reza gave an evaluation of the plays to the audience.
