Zahir Raihan debuted as a director with the movie Kokhono Asheni. Azizul Haque and Manzurul Haque were the producers and Khan Ataur Rahman was the music director of the film. Sumita Devi, Shabnam and Khan Ataur Rahman portrayed the lead roles and the movie was released on November 24, 1961. The commercial for the film said, "People would get a rare opportunity of watching a movie now that they might have expected to see 20 years later."

Let There Be Light, Zahir Raihan's much awaited movie, was intended to be in English initially and it was also supposed to be dubbed in Bangla, Urdu, Russian, French, German and Spanish. The shooting for the film began in August, 1970. Although initially Olivia Gomez was cast as the leading lady, she was replaced by Babita before shooting for the film started. The movie could not be completed as the Liberation War began in 1971.
