This year, the 50th death anniversary of German novelist Thomas Mann (1875-1955) is being celebrated all over the world in a befitting manner. Thomas Mann is not only the greatest German fiction writer of the 20th century, but also one of the best in world literature. His novels and short stories depict the predicament of the modern man. His vast oeuvre includes world famous novels likeThe Magic Mountain, Buddenbrooks, Doktor Faustus, Death in Venice. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 for his monumental workBuddenbrooks.

The Goethe-Institut Dhaka has organised a reading of his short story The Transposed Heads (1940) and a discussion on it today at its auditorium in Dhanmondi. Nurul Huda, the German language teacher of the Goethe-Institut Dhaka and Prof. Jahangir Tareque of the Modern Language Institute, University of Dhaka, will read the story and discuss on it. In the second part of the programme, the first part of the biographical film-trilogy The Manns Novel of the Century (2001), made by Heinrich Breloer, will be screened at 6:45 pm today and the second and third parts will be screened at 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm tomorrow. This film-trilogy is being screened in association with Zahir Raihan Film Society.
