Ekushey celebrations at JU

The 14-day programme organised by Teachers Students Centre (TSC) of Jahangir-nagar University (JU) commemorating Language Martyrs day and International Mother Language day at the university and will continue till February 28.

The two week long programme began last Saturday with the inauguration of an exhibition jointly organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) and TSC, attracted many students. VC Prof Jasim Uddin Ahmad inaugurated the programme with a minute's silence and the singing of "Amar Bhaier Roktey Rangano…" in memory of the language martyrs.

Two pro-VC's Prof Enamul Huq Khan, Prof Imamuddin Ahmad and treasurer ABM Enayet Hossain were present at the session as special guests while Prof Ahmad Reza, convenor of programme arrangement committee, presided over the inaugural session.

"The contribution of fine arts to work in harmony to overcome the country's present unstable situation is remarkable," said VC Prof Jasim Uddin Ahmad.

"Most of our people don't know about fine arts. This exhibition has been arranged to get our people acquainted with this sector. The practise of fine arts will strengthen our younger," said Subir Chowdhury, director of Fine arts faculty of BSA, at the inauguration.

A total of 58 exhibits painted between 1948 and 2000 by different eminent artists including Joynal Abedin, Niton Kondu, Kamrul Hasan, Rafiqun Nabi, Tarun Ghosh and three sculptures by sculptors Hamiduzzaman Khan and Alok Roy are on display.

The theme of the paintings are the Liberation War, various movements of the Bangladeshis, starvation and floods in our country, the villagers' struggle for existence and our country's heritage. Oil, gouache, pencil sketches, brush, pen and ink and dry print were used. The exhibition concluded yesterday.

The second phase of the programme began today with a book fair with books written, edited, published and translated by teachers, students, officers and employees of the university. Cultural programmes by different organisations of the university will also take place. State minister for cultural affairs Selima Rahman will inaugurate the fair.

Meanwhile, Jahangirnagar University Sangskritik Jote (JUSJ) has arranged a two-day programme to celebrate International Mother Language day scheduled to be held on February 21 and 22 at the Muktamanch including two street plays, recitation and singing.
