An evening with poets

recently. Prominent and promising poets recited their poems at the programme organised on the occasion of the spring festival for poets.

Eminent poet Nirmalendu Goon recited his poems Amar Bashanto Shudhu and Suchitra Sen. Among others popular poets Mahadev Shaha and Muhammad Samad also read from their own works.

About the contemporary style of today's poetry, Muhammad Samad said, "Although poets enjoy immense freedom in choosing words to express their feelings, a poet must not use indecent words which is often seen in the works of the new generation poets."

Among the upcoming poets, Sadia Arman recited her two poems titled Paper Doll and River Thames, both of which were on the adverse effects of modern technology and human civilisation. Mahbub-e-Rabbani recited some surrealistic poems such as Shuchetana, Shuranjana and Shabita of poet Jibanananda Das. Journalist Shahnaz Munni recited her own poems Sharbahara, Bhaluk, Bholar Shadhona, Bichchheder Gaan and Dakkhinmukhi Ghar, the last one portraying the reality of a woman's life. Journalist Anisur Rahman recited his poems on love and current trends of the socio-political situation of the country.

Poet Alfred Khokon presented his three poems portraying his feelings about love and nature. After narrating an introduction in order to give a picture of the prevailing unrest in the country, Tokon Thaakoor recited some of his poems including Kobita Ashey Na which is a well written poem and appropriate to the present time. However, his other poems were also satiric but did not meet popular expectation because of his inclusion of some vulgar words.
