Folk song festival of mystic poets

On the second day of the festival titled Songs of Hundred Mystic Poets 2003, a documentaryLukano Manikwas screened. The documentary was initially produced for the television and hosted by eminent music director Khan Ataur Rahman. Directed by Indra Mohon Rajbongshi, the documentary was about the songs and life of a Bengalee mystic poet Bhoba Pagla. Many of his songs likeAmit Tirthabashi Hobo Na Mon, Chor Dhukechhey Ghorey Re Mon, Khodar Fazaley Dekhechhi Duniya, Guru Amay Koro Karunaand others were performed by Dilruba Khan, Bipul Bhattacharya, Kiron Chandra Roy and other eminent folk singers. Born in a village of Dhaka district, Bhoba Pagla wrote manyBaul, ShyamaandBhaowaiyasongs.

In the musical session that followed, singers rendered folk songs like Shyama, Bhaowaiya, Baul, Marfati and others. Ashraf Uddin Babu sang two songs of Amir Ali Chisti and Ismail Fakir titled Brahmandey Dayal Jini and Gurupremer Roshik Jara. Sunindita Neepa sang Amar Shonar Moyna Pakhi of M Osman Khan. Artiste Arif Dewan rendered Kabir Uddin Dewan's Hoiley Manush Cheney Manush and Abdul Malek Dewan's Amar Jibon Jaibar Agey. Indra Mohon Rajbongshi, Rafiqul Alam, Abida Sultana, Akramul Islam, Phulrenu Das, Chandana Majumdar, Iffat Ara Nargis and Noshin Laila also presented rare Baul songs.

Performer Arif Dewan said, 'The grass root level Baul singers did not participate in this festival as they do not sing the songs of the mystic poets. They write and compose songs of their own and perform them. But they should have been included in this festival because they are the ones who also promote folk music in the country.'
