Geetanjali presents sweet songs of spring

On the budding branch of a Shimul tree the cuckoo sits, and sings sweet songs of spring. Isn't this a familiar scene in spring? This time of the year is known as Bashanta in Bangla and has a powerful presence in our culture and rituals. And just as the Bangla New Year is at our doorstep, heralded by rising temperatures and sudden storms, it is the time to bid farewell to spring.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. This time of the year is celebrated with enthusiasm in Dhaka. Among the events being held is a musical soiree by Geetanjali-- a school of music. The venue of the April 9 function was the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra auditorium.
The audience were treated to a medley of Tagore's spring songs through the media of chorus, solo and recitation.
The programme served to perk up the audience--notwithstanding the impending warm weather. The powerful effect of the spring songs by the artists of the Geetanjali transported the audience to a world of music that hails not only spring but captivates the minds of the music aficionados.
Tagore's timeless numbers such as Tomar anondo oi elo darey, Aaj khela bhangar khela, Manjori o manjori aamer manjori, Amar boney boney dhorlo mukul and many others were rendered at the programme.
Salma Akbar, Nayeema Ali, Nahar Jamil, Sajed Akbar, Sanchita Mitra, Seema Sarkar and others rendered songs in chorus and solo while Jayonto Rai with his excellent recitation delighted the audience.
