Hamiduzzman Khan, a modern sculptor

Rafiqun Nabi said that he had known Hamiduzzaman Khan as a student and colleague. He said that not only his sculpture but also his water colours and oil were admirable. Nabi spoke of the time Hamid had a serious accident and his friends feared for his death. In Nabi's words, " We were told that the artist had to go abroad for a cure. This added to his experience in studying art and affected his style. Another major influence on his work was the Liberation Movement which resulted in work on genocide. For me, sculpture is a difficult part of fine arts, which I wouldn't dare to approach. Even Hamid's watercolours are well worth studying."

Professor Nazrul Islam said, "I have been associated with Hamid for two years while the book was being put together. In the book , in my article, I traced his development to the present position in the field of sculpture. Along with Shahabuddin, Hamiduzzaman has well represented the Liberation War. The book cover has been designed by Ataur Rehman Ripon. He felt the need for a book on himself when he went to Korea and found that other artists had books on themselves. This book is a good representation of Bangladesh through sculpture."

Professor Kaiser Haque said that the production was a superior one. He said that as he is Hamid's neighbour he had an opportunity to see the book being put together. He also remarked that Hamid's personality is an irresistible one. The book , he said was not only a record of Hamid's sculpture but also his paintings. It is important, he added, that the book should be well distributed.

Nahas Khalil, architect, said that there is a dearth of good sculpture on par with that of Hamid's. Khalil said that even though we are a poor country we should keep sculptors in mind when we are building public places.

Hamiduzzaman, speaking to The Daily Star, said, " I've been planning to have this book written since I was a student of fine arts. The book is written by Professor Nazrul Islam. When I went overseas and met foreign artists, specially when I was in Korea, I felt the need of a book to acquaint others on the kind of work I've done in my country. The book traces the development from my student days of representative art to the abstract work that I'm doing today. My metal work has especially been stressed on."
