'Hindi film music has lost its soul'

The golden voice of the by-gone era, Manna Dey on Saturday lamented that Hindi film music has lost its soul and "quickies" are reigning supreme.

"Time has changed everything. Earlier, music was created for hearts but these days it is only for the ears," the veteran singer, who was a contemporary of Mohammad Rafi, told reporters.

Describing the current phase of film music as "disappointing," Dey said the "quickies" being churned out these days have a very short shelf life. "A song is recorded today, released tomorrow and goes out of listeners' memory a day after," he said.

"I do not know whom to blame. We cannot blame musicians and singers. Yeh to samay ki maar hai (changing times are to blame)," Dey said in a function in Jaipur.

However, he named AR Rehman and Anu Malik as his favourites among the new crop of music directors.

On the new trend of remixing of old songs and how he would feel if his own songs were to be remixed, Dey said: " Main hazar maut mar jaunga (I'll die a thousand deaths)."
