Homage to Tareque Shahriar

Eleven active and like-minded film societies of Bangladesh have organised a session dedicated to Tareque Shahriar, a renowned film society activist, alternative filmmaker and short story writer, who died recently. Tribute to Tareque Shahriar will be followed by the screening of his critically acclaimed films: Great Woman Sufia Kamal, The Chain-Breaking Songs, The Wings of the Butterfly, The Black House, and Water and Wheel. The films will be screened at the Iranian Cultural Centre at Road No. 8/A, Dhanmondi, at 5.00 PM on Monday, July 21.

Tareque Shahriar was born in 1962 in Sirajganj in Pabna. He did his graduation in Bengali Literature from the University of Dhaka. He became interested in films during his college days. In the 1980s he came to be known as a creative short story writer. He started publishing his short stories in different little magazines. Then he started making documentary films himself. He was the Vice President of Zahir Raihan Film Society for the term 1987 - 1991. He was the President of Bangladesh Short Film Forum till he died on June 5 of cardiac arrest.

The organising film societies include Zahir Raihan Film Society, Dhaka University Film Society, Chalachitram Film Society, Rainbow Film Society, Dhaka Film Society, Sergei Bondarchuk Film Club, Dhaka Film Club, Jahangirnagar Students Film Society, Gana Bishwabidyalaya Film Society, Arkka Film Zeal and Chittagong University Film Society.
