'I draw inspiration from nature'

Recalling his acting career, Jayanto says, 'In the late 1960s when I was in Kolkata, I used to perform in theatre and received several awards. After settling here, I was first involved in recitation. I think, this art form helps me greatly in my acting career, as all art forms are interrelated. Nature and surroundings are my main inspiration. Simultaneously, one must have an analytical mind to become a quality actor. Moreover, the artiste needs to read more and watch art exhibitions as well.'
Jayanto harks back to his recent work. As he says, ''Recently, I have performed in a TV play in Kolkata. I was impressed with their professionalism. Their payment may not match ours, however, they pay the artistes after each shift and the payment is fixed for each shift. That is why the artistes and the technical crews are equally punctual and dedicated to their work. Moreover, a performer does not need to worry about elements like costumes and make-up, among others. People are appointed to bear those responsibilities. I think this approach should be introduced in Bangladesh.'
Jayanto ascribes the declining quality of dramas to the lopsided approach of the television channels. 'As the TV channels have reduced the rate of a play, the quality of drama has deteriorated. I clinched the best actor's award for my performance in the tele-film Choturtha Matra (fourth dimension), which got three awards in fact- best director, best playwright and best actor. But the producer of the tele-film had to lose Taka 3 lakh. How can you expect a quality production when the channels pay only Taka 1.40 lakh for a one-hour play and the artistes as well as the crews are not professional in the true sense?' he questions.
He is not impressed with the current scenario of the film industry. 'Very few quality mainstream and alternative films are being produced in the country. Only Shujodighol Bari and Matir Moyna have won awards abroad. Short film Aagami and documentary film Shei Rater Katha Bolte Ashechhi have got awards from India and Nepal respectively. But the number should have increased. Though many films have got quality theme, however, filmmaking needs to be standardised.'
Jayanto is a popular reciter of the country. He said, 'I am not in touch with any recitation organisation and I do not think that membership of these organisations helps one to become a better reciter. Recently, I recited in France and the USA, which, the audience enjoyed.'
He plans to add to his busy schedule by acting in a film directed by K Das of India with the support of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Moreover, he will go to USA to act in an English film. This is a joint venture of India and Bangladesh.
