Magic Pencil

British Council has acquired facsimile prints of 60 illustrations from the original Artwork of Magic Pencil and arranged an exhibition at the institute's auditorium. The illustrations have been chosen by the celebrated children's author and illustrator, Quentin Blake, first incumbent of the post of Children's Laureate.
The exhibition features the artworks of 13 most accomplished and innovative illustrators in print today of the UK like Quentin Blake himself, Raymond Briggs, Tony Ross, John Burningham and Michael Foreman. Others represent new and varied ways of approaching book illustration, such as the photographic collages and creative layouts of Sara Fanelli and Lauren Child.
The illustrations are taken from different books of fairytales, comics and other books for children. An illustration by Angela Barrett taken from the book Snow White of Josephine Poole offers a pleasant picture. It shows Snow White is running through the woods along with the inhabitant--foxes, wolves and tigers. This tells her helplessness when she was evicted from home by her stepmother.
The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent artist of the country Mustofa Monwar. He said in his speech, 'Illustration is not just a picture, it helps the child understand the story itself. Illustration depicts the love and affection for the children. And we have a tradition of illustration in our country and there is playfulness in these pictures.'
Among others Feroz Alauddin, Director of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, and Charles Nuttall, Deputy Director of British Council, also spoke at the occasion. Besides the exhibition there will be multimedia presentation, screening of animation films and puppet show arranged for the children. The exhibition will remain open up to August 15 every day from 10am to 6 pm.
