May Day celebrations: Cultural scene livens up

Cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes at different venues to observe the May Day. Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) and Bangladesh Patha Natok Parishod (BPNP) jointly arranged a programme at Suhrawardy Udyan. Mannan Heera, the president of BPNP, was the chairperson, while M Hamid, Jhuna Chawdhury, Saiful Islam Mahmud and Mizanur Rahman discussed the role of the cultural activists in joining force with the workers to combat 'oppression of labourers'. After the speech three street plays were staged.

In keeping with tradition, theatre group Aranyak Natya Dal arranged a programme next to the Shaheed Minar on May Day. Discussants in the programme urged for a collaboration between political and cultural activists. They demanded that May Day be observed like other National Days. Chief of Aranyak Natya Dal, Mamunur Rashid inaugurated the programme.

After the speeches, Hasan Arif and Ahkamullah recited poems on the struggle of the proletariat. Then poet Nirmulendu Goon recited some poems from his own book.

At the end of the programme Aranyak staged a patha natok (street play) Monga Kahini, written and directed by Mannan Heera.

The play successfully portrays the sufferings of the peasants of Rangpur area and the politics of the corrupt leaders. Monga Kahini has the touch of traditional pala. The audience, mostly from the working class, thoroughly enjoyed the play.
