Nowadays acid attacks are rampant in Bangladesh. Women, children and even men--none are spared. Most often, women are the targets of such violence. The reasons cited frequently range from refusal of marriage proposals, family or land disputes, to unmet dowry demands. Particularly vulnerable are the lower socio-economic groups both in urban and rural areas.

In recognition of these hard facts, popular singer Kumar Bishwajit and 17 young performers of Closeup1 have taken the initiative to contribute their talent to the campaign against acid violence in Bangladesh. On July 7, they performed in a musical concert, titled Kumar Bishwajit O Closeup 1 Taroka Shandha, organised by Gaanchil at National Museum Auditorium.

The performers were welcomed with an overflowing hall. Young and old alike flocked the venue to listen to the melodious voices of the talented artistes.

Though the show was slated to kick off around 6:30 pm, it began an hour late. According to some members of the audience, the Closeup 1 artistes had matured both musically and spiritually.

Rinku's energetic performance, tiled Kanar hathbazar created the right vibes. The next song, Sham balika rendered by Rumi, also went down well with the audience. The music number was both written and composed by Rumi. After a brief pause, versatile singer Sonia took the stage with a folk song, Ore garial bhai, which was received with a huge roar of approval by the crowd. The talented finalists of the Closeup 1 contest, Nolok, Rajib, Beauty, Khushbu, Champa, Ronti Das, Ariful, Rashed, Rumi, Mahadi, Naurin and Arin also rendered songs at the event.
