'Nari': Successful women in the spotlight on ATN Bangla

In this episode, 2005 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Sufia Khatun will talk about her struggle and success at the grassroots level. A Union Parishad member in Comilla, she will also talk about her future plans.

A silent victim of domestic violence until 1984, Sufia Khatun's life changed dramatically after she met with activists from the NGO Nijera Kori (which means doing it ourselves) who told her about human rights and the need for collective action to assert those rights. Mobilising women, she set up a women's group first in her own, then in neighbouring villages, where organisations of landless people formed a regional committee. Her mobilisation has led to a reduction in domestic violence in the area, and the weakening of fundamentalist forces.
