Nazrul's 107th birth anniversary celebration ends in Trishal

The programme included cultural shows performed by various groups of greater Mymensingh and Dhaka. Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the programme. Besides musical soirees, many cultural groups also staged plays written by Nazrul and dance sequences based on Nazrul's songs. Another attractive feature of the celebrations was the recitations of Nazrul's poems by contemporary poets. Nazrul Mela also drew a large crowd.

The speakers at the discussions--held before every cultural show--asserted that Nazrul was not only a rebel poet, he was also a romantic by nature. While his inspirational songs were steeped in the spirit of patriotism and inspired the freedom loving people to fight against the British colonial rule, he showed equal dexterity in composing romantic songs, which enlightened the hearts of the listeners.

A large number of people from distant places gathered at Trishal to enjoy the cultural shows. Many people, specially the rural populace, take the opportunity to join in the celebrations every year as they do not have the opportunity for such programmes outside their locality, said Nazib Ashraf, director of Mymensingh Sangeet Biddyalaya. Shahadat Hossain Khan Hilu, director of Bahurupi Nattya Sanstha maintained that such national level programmes outside Dhaka would definitely enable us to revive the traditional Bengalee culture. Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh, Md Golam Mustafa, who presided over the concluding session, thanked the audience for their joyous participation in making the three- day programme a resounding success.
