A two-day Orchid exhibition was held recently in Gulshan, organised by the Orchid Society of Bangladesh. This exhibition took place at the residence of Naseem Iqbal, president of the society. A walk around the small garden portrayed a variety of orchid species, some even belonging to rare qualities of species.

Different breeds of orchids of yellow, red and purple surrounded the garden and the visitors. These included Vanda teret, Vanda, D. Queen Southeast, V. Gordon Dillon, Haworthia Limifolia and many more. A certain breed, called the Dancing lady, had a small yellow petal resembling a lady's skirt, and tiny red dots, portraying the lady's face and two arms. Another unusual breed of orchid plants were the hanging ones, where the plants were hung from a height and the roots were left to dangle above the ground. The plants live merely on air and water and special fertilizers. Another breed of orchids were seen potted in charcoal and coconut husks.

The Orchid Society of Bangladesh was formed on May 27, 1989 and had started off with just 5 members. Today they have extended to about 30 members.
