'Puthi' comes to town

Against this dismal backdrop, a recent function by a group of students of the Civil and Environmental (CEE) department of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) was heartening. The programme hinged on a recitation of puthi together with acting.
A sizeable audience was present on the occasion.
The theme of the puthi was a collected folk story of the snake charmer community. This group has been waging a tough fight for its survival. The puthi, wonderfully recited by Munir, a student of the department, centred on the snake charmer's life. The ambience was perfect with the artiste seated on a mat under a lantern and a brilliant setting.
The story was composed by Mir Mofizul Islam, an alumnus of the department. The theme revolved around the love story of Aruna, daughter of a snake charmer. Giving life to the characters was the talented cast of Bonna, Shumon and Emdad in the respective roles of Aruna, Angshu and Dada. The stage presentation by Masudul Haq Sumon was assisted in stage preparation by Masudul Haq and in music by Sumi, Tamanna and Fatema. Also noteworthy was Shefali, who collected the lyrics and lent her voice to capture rural life.
