Yesterday was the 79th birthday of eminent Rabindra Sangeet artiste of the subcontinent, Kanika Bandyopadhyay. To celebrate the auspicious occasion, Mitali, a leading organisation of Indo-Bangla Cultural Society, arranged a programme entitled Ganga-Padma Milon Utsav at the Shishir Mancha in Kolkata. Two Bangladeshi performers Nargis Chowdhury and Fahim Hossain Chowdhury, and Ritu Guha and Pankaj Saha from West Bengal performed songs on the occasion.

Kanika Bandyopadhyay, more intimately called 'Mohor'di', established Mitali back in 1991 a few days before the Baishakh 25--the birth anniversary of poet Rabindranath Tagore. At a gathering, Kanika expressed her eagerness to reconcile the culture of the two Bengals. Since then, every October 12, Mitali celebrates its founding anniversary along with Kanika's birthday.

The artistes of Mitali presented Tomay Notun Kore Pabo Boley--a musical soiree yesterday. Two eminent Rabindra Sangeet artistes of West Bengal--Dwijen Mukho-padhyay and Arghya Sen--were bestowed honour at the progra-mme.

Earlier at 8 in the morning saplings were sowed at the birthplace of Kanika in Bankura of West Bengal.
