A reflection of contemporary world

One of Fokhrul¿s works on display

The coherence of these images go far beyond their common palette and technique, but is produced in several series, which explore thematically a particular perspective. Some of these paintings are fossilised and some portray gloomy landscapes and sky. The power of the paintings multiply in their conjunction, feeding off each other, invoking an interior landscape previously known only to Fokhrul. Each of the paintings in burnt sienna and black reflects the relics of the earth as well as the fall of humanity.

The dotted texture created by the mixture of mustard and printer's ink on the burnt sienna in the painting titled "Image 10" co-relates with the message of the artist’s work. The dark background of the painting has created the image of a wasteland, which to Fokhrul is the reality of life.

Images of forests and sky in his works -- Images 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11 and 12" -- have not appeared colourfully like the romantics in Fokhrul's work. Rather the gloominess' of the paintings suggests the gradual phenomenon of the world perceiving the fall of humanity.

Image 19 is another interesting work. Five balls, one almost tripping from the platform, suggests the ongoing decadence in earth.

Image 8 and 9 can be considered as one of the best works of the artist. The fossilised images created by the black dots on burnt sienna reflect the barren earth.

As Fokhrul said, "When I create, I don't suggest any title. I express my own feelings through my work, and give the viewers a chance to make their own interpretations, and I really enjoy doing that. Obviously I deliver my messages through the paintings, and when the viewers relate with the messages and enjoy these, it brings me immense pleasure."

The 10-day solo painting exhibition was inaugurated by Dr Gouriswar Bhattacharya, the art historian, Institute of Indian Philology, on March 3 at the Alliance Francaise. Myriam Bassinot, the Director of Alliance Francaise was the special guest at the opening ceremony.
