Remembering Hasmat

On November 10, the country lost one of it's most gifted comedians, Hasmat.. He had been suffering from kidney ailments earlier this month, which led to his admission to BIRDEM on November 5.

Hasmat Ullah Khan was born in Old Dhaka, in 1936 and was initially involved in theatre. Later on, he moved into films, through which he gained nation-wide fame. His debut film was Narayan Ghosh Mita's Chawa Pawa, where Hasmat had also worked as the assistant director. He was also the assistant director of Neel Akasher Niche and Etotuku Asha.

He reigned over the Bangladeshi cinema for a long time with his superb comedy. Off-screen he was a man of sophistication and style, which was totally opposed to his on-screen appearance. According to many, Hasmat had a heart of gold. In his lifetime, he assisted many a poor person and helped a number of orphans People will remember him as the comedian who was famous for his 'knickerbockers' outfits in films.
